E.L – The B.A.R (Best African Rapper)

  • E.L finally dropped his LP and I’m late as usual. I’ll admit, I wasn’t looking forward to it due to my Afrobeats hangover. Thankfully I was mistaken, and pleasantly surprised. This was all hip-hop without a whiff of Azonto. In his words, “your mean muggin’ don’t mean nothin.” With a title like Best African Rapper (B.A.R), this is E.L at his most assertive, cocksure best. I don’t know about the self-assigned Best African Rapper title, but E.L. sure does make a compelling argument for that proclamation. He employs the copious amounts of bluster typical of rappers as he finds his place in a spectrum of well-selected beats. I can’t wait to hear his upcoming album. Appearances from M.anifest, Sarkodie and C-Real notwithstanding, E.L holds his own not only as a rapper, but an accomplished producer as well.

  • The album, recorded at Nyhan-Nyhan Studios in Jo’burg, constructed & recorded with a range of producers and songwriters (Bongani Fassie, SideEffex, St. Bosseratti, 37 MPH, Sixfo, THX, D-Slim, AirDee), features iFani collaborating with a number of different artists that include Blaksuga, Nomsa & Bongz. Fani is often defined as the comedian of South African rap. The Eastern Cape native is known for his witty, somewhat cheeky and outrageous lyrics. Some have defined him as loud. Many settle for fresh. iFani—born Mzayifani Mzondeleli Boltina—only raps in his native Xhosa.. Highly talented both as an MC and a rapper, iFani’s entry into the market has been a chart topping one. With his unique look and lyrical ability, iFani made sure he would not go unnoticed and has had the public in awe since releasing his first single Ewe.

  • Three years after his much acclaimed MotswakOriginator album, Khuli Chana has released his second solo studio album entitled Lost in Time. The album transcends the here and now and is an album that aims to take its listeners on a journey of rediscovering Khuli Chana. He named this album Lost in Time simply because he feels he has been “lost in time” with the making this album after the success of his first album MotswakOriginator. In Lost in time all the tracks were written by Khuli. The songs were produced by the likes of pH Of RawX Studios, Steve “Sticky” Raphadu, Trompie of Beatmachine, Ab Crazy and Victory Chauke. In the album he also worked with the like AKA, Towdee, Zeus, KayGizm, and Reason amongst others Lost In Time shows a mature, seasoned Khuli Chana who’s so comfortable in his own skin that he doesn’t even have to try hard, he naturally oozes a lyrical charm about him that’s seen him dominate the industry for the last three years, and this album reinforces that appeal.
