  • Owl City is the musical brainchild of Adam Young, who launched the project in 2007 while living at his parents’ home in Owatonna, Minnesota. Troubled by insomnia, Young began spending his evenings in the household basement, where a computer and several instruments provided a diversion from his sleeping patterns. He eventually combined those diversions into a blend of electronica and emo-pop, using little more than his computer and various keyboards to record the material. Songs were uploaded to MySpace upon completion, and Young began attracting a surprising amount of attention on the networking site. Of particular note was “Hello Seattle,” a fabricated ode to the Emerald City whose viral popularity earned Young a record contract with Universal Republic.

  • Along with its captivating performances and thoughtfully written screenplay, the film adaptation of Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower boasted a soundtrack that added to its authenticity and emotional impact. Set during the early '90s, the film's music features some of the era's definitive songs plus some older classics: Sonic Youth's "Daydream Nation," New Order's "Temptation," Galaxie 500's "Tugboat," the Smiths' "Asleep," and David Bowie's "Heroes" are some of the many highlights here. With mixtape-like intimacy, the album echoes the connections between the film's characters, but that heartfelt vibe reaches listeners as well.

  • The movie franchise has Jennifer Lawrence to both create new songs and hire other artists to write and perform material of their own. The new work follows the main strategy of the last soundtrack: It throws echo around everything and lets dense, ambient sound creep over the voices and instruments. Like the previous “Games” album, “Mockingjay” has a distinct ’80s feel, evident in its more-is-more approach. The opening track, “Meltdown,” piles on too many players, including Lorde, two rappers (Pusha T and Q-Tip) and the vocal trio Haim. Other songs recall the Reagan-era sounds of Kate Bush (the group Chvrches on “Dead Air”) or Peter Gabriel (Bat for Lashes’ “Plan the Escape”).

  • Lets Duel! It's Time the Duel, the words synonym to Yu-Gi-Oh. Based on the popular animated series and card game of the same name, YU-GI-OH! Follows the adventures of Yugi, a young student who must face off against the evil Egyptian god Anubis. The music on the YU-GI-OH! Soundtrack is appropriately energetic, beginning with the defiant rock track "You're Not Me," featuring vocalist Marty Bags. For the albums only hip-hop tunes, the Black Eyed Peas contribute the funky, furious "For the People" and Fatty Koo launches into the horn-laden "It's Over." The Deleted offer up two punk-pop tracks, "Blind Ambition" and "U Better Fear Me," perfectly echoing the action-packed, dramatic elements of the YU-GI-OH! Movie.

  • Gotye (pronounced “go-ti-yay” or “Gauthier”) is the alias of Australian electronic pop trickster Wally de Backer. Born in Belgium and raised in Melbourne, de Backer began making music in his bedroom as a teen, and for several years fronted the rock band Downstares. After the group dissolved, he gravitated toward cut-and-paste electronic music, and in 2003 issued the first Gotye album, Boardface. Like Drawing Blood followed two years later, notching the cult hit “Learnalilgivinanlovin” and earning J Award consideration from the influential Aussie radio station Triple J. De Backer concurrently served in the Melbourne pop trio the Basics. In 2011 Gotye released Making Mirrors, featuring a duet with vocalist Kimbra, “Somebody That I Used to Know.” The song became a global hit in 2012, charting in Billboard’s Hot 100 and Rock Songs charts.

  • With her blend of folk melodies, synthesized backdrops, and classical motifs, Enya created a distinctive style that more closely resembled new age than the folk and Celtic music that provided her initial influences. Enya is from Gweedore, County Donegal, Ireland, which she left in 1980 to join the Irish band Clannad, the group that already featured her older brothers and sisters. She stayed with Clannad for two years, then left, hooking up with producer Nicky Ryan and lyricist Roma Ryan, with whom she recorded film and television scores. The result was a successful album of TV music for the BBC. Enya then recorded Watermark (1988), which featured her distinctive, flowing music and multi-overdubbed trancelike singing; the album sold eight million copies worldwide. Watermark established Enya as an international star and launched a successful career that lasted well into the ’90s.

Florence and the Machine – Discography [iTunes Plus + AAC M4A + M4V]

  • Hailing from South London, Florence Mary Leontine Welch writes songs that occupy the same confessional territory as gossip-loving, genre-bending contemporaries like Amy Winehouse, Kate Nash, Adele, and Lily Allen and the moody, classic art rock of Kate Bush, blending pop, soul, and baroque arrangements into a sound that earned the young artist considerable buzz in 2007. Managed by the Camden-based DJ duo the Queens of Noize and backed by a rotating lineup of musicians, Florence + the Machine released their debut single, “Kiss with a Fist,” on the Moshi Moshi label in June 2008. The critically acclaimed debut album Lungs followed in July 2009 and quickly became one of the year’s most popular releases in the U.K., where Florence charted four Top 40 singles in less than 12 months. The songs gathered steam in other parts of the world, too, particularly in America, where “Dog Days Are Over” peaked at number 21, went platinum, and even earned its own performance on the TV show Glee. Lungs was reissued the following year in a two-disc package entitled Between Two Lungs, and included a bonus 12-track disc that featured live versions and remixes.
